Structural engineering is concerned with the structural design of man-made structures and is often described as designing the ‘bones and
muscles’ of structures. Structural engineers need to understand the rigidity, stability and strength of both buildings and non-building structures. This includes factors such as loading and susceptibility to earthquakes.
Together with its partners, the Division provides core structural consulting services that include structural design, engineering for high wind and seismic environments, peer review and value engineering, forensic engineering and structural investigations, building renovations and alterations, blast-resistant design, construction inspection and 3D visualisation.
The Division capabilities include the design of structures on constrained inner-city sites with all of the associated challenges. It offers commercial solutions to reduce wind damage to high-rise buildings through the use of high-strength concrete and steel, as well as the intelligent application of accelerated damping. It also ensures the structural integrity of buildings in demanding seismic environments.
